GALEX First Light - Dedication - Columbia STS-107 Crew

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), launched by a Pegasus rocket on April 28 2003, has obtained "first light", observing an area of the sky located in the constellation Hercules. To honor the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Columbia, the first light field has been chosen in an area of the heavens that was directly overhead Columbia as it made its last contact to NASA Mission Control. The "Columbia Dedication Field", commemorates those seven astronauts who were lost over the skies of Texas on February 1.
