GALEX First Light - blowup

This is a blowup of a region in the first image obtained by GALEX after launch. It is constructed from images obtained with the Far ultraviolet (FUV) detector (colored blue) and Near ultraviolet (NUV) detector (colored red).

Although the exposure time is less then 3% of that used in GALEX Deep Imaging Survey (DIS) observations, more than 100 sources are detected in this small section of the First Light image. DIS observations are expected to reveal about 10,000 faint ultraviolet sources, the majority of which will be distant star forming galaxies. Posted on: 19 Apr, 2005
